March MARFC General Meeting Report for 2018!

Our March meeting was held in conjunction with the Old Timers Reunion at the Toledo Speedway Bar & Grille. This event was well attended and hosted a round table discussion with Indy’s Donald Davison, Ron Hemelgarn, Tom Bigelow, Andy Hillenburg and Karl Busson. Ron Drager & Scott Schultz both informed us what’s coming up at both the Toledo & Flat Rock Speedways for 2018 as well as the ARCA Series. Larry LaMay let us know how his “60 Years of Auto Racing on Both Sides of the Fence” book has been well received by many folks across the community as well as around the country. Winner of the 50/50 raffle for the night was Al Peltier. Thanks to Ron Drager and ARCA for having us back again this year and hosting this awesome event. Past MARFC Board Member Jan Shaffer Passes Away!

We here at MARFC are very saddened to hear of the passing of Jan Shaffer. He was battling an illness for quite some time. Jan received our Motor Sports Writer of the year at our 1976 banquet. He had been writing for the Oakland press at that time. As well as being a member of our club. He was also our club’s co-publicity director for 1972 and 1973. Jan also served on the board of directors in 1990 and 1991.Our thoughts & prayers are with the Shaffer family at this time.

LONGTIME MARFC BOARD MEMBER PASSES AWAY!

Dear MARFC Members!

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that longtime board member Larry Iacoboni AKA: The Bald Eagle passed away this morning after a very long fight with cancer. The Bald Eagle has taken his final flight home to be with the Lord. He has crossed the finish line in life as the checkered flag waves one last time and now stands proudly next to the Lord. Larry has been a tremendous asset to our club over the years not only as a member at first but, then as a board member. During my years on the board Larry was always focused to make sure to back me up when I needed it and was there to travel with me many times to fan club day events, general meetings and MSPA meetings to help support the club. For many years he was our raffle prize chairperson for our annual banquets and was our chef at our MARFC Picnics for many years as well. He spent a couple of terms as Vice-President and did that job extremely well. Larry was a volunteer for the Detroit Grand Prix for over 18 years and enjoyed every minute of it. He even worked briefly at the Waterford Hills Raceway as a corner and track worker. Larry joined the club when Bill Stone approached him and asked him to join and it didn’t take long for him to get onto the board. When I became President 20 years ago I asked him to be our Santa and he just laughed at me and said that was Bill Stones job. I know he would have been good at it but, he was there every year serving pizza and hot dogs to the kids. He really enjoyed our Children’s Christmas Party the most. Larry was married to a wonderful woman Suzanne! Our hearts are heavy with sadness for her loss and ours. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sue and the Iacoboni family at this time. I personally looked at Larry like a big brother who you ask to help you when you needed it. God has taken Larry from us today but rest assured that one day we will be with him in the Kingdom of Heaven!

“Rest Well My Brother” and one day I’ll see you soon!  Wild Bill

MARFC Fundraiser & Bowling Tournament in Books for 2018!

Our 1st Annual MARFC Fundraiser & Bowling Tournament held on February 24, 2018 at the Capitol Bowl in Owosso was a great success for our first outing. Many thanks to all who donated items and their time to help up raise fund for the MARFC Randall Ginter Memorial Benevolent Fund and the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society was on hand and was very appreciative of what we were doing for both causes. After the event a short awards ceremony was held, and the winners were the Greg Yost Never Give Up Award went to Lux while the Men’s High Score was awarded to Jack Oakley with a 233. The Women’s High Score went to Becca Trinklein with a 136 and the Team High Score was won by Garret Smith and Jack Oakley with a 738 series. The Chris Throgmartin Spirit Award will be presented to Mike Sturgill later. A special award was presented to the family of our dear friend Larry Loynes who was a very important part of this event for many years prior to his passing. A very special thanks to Chuck Darling who helped spearhead this event and assisted us in making this fundraiser happen. Also, many thanks to the folks at the Capitol Bowl in Owosso for their donation for our first of what will be a yearly event for years to come.
