October Updates!

The MARFC Board of Directors and Officers are happy to announce the following top award winners for 2010 to be honored at our January 15, 2011 Awards Banquet and Dinner dance.

The Eddie Sachs Jr. Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award is going to none other than “The King of The Midgets” Mr. Mel Kenyon. Mel has been a great ambassador for not only the sport of Auto Racing but also in his Christian walk. Mel is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and collectively with his brother Don; the duo is in six different Halls of Fame. Mel Kenyon has an estimated 375 wins in his career as well 4 top 5 finishes in 8 starts in the Indianapolis 500 as well as 7 USAC National Midget titles. Given that Eddie Sachs Jr. is known for his prowess at the Brickyard and in open wheel racing this award is a natural honor for Mel Kenyon and upon notification was very honored and happy to hear of the upcoming honor.

The MARFC Electronic Media Award is being presented to the website Water Winter Wonderland founded and maintained by Gary Ritzenthaler. Ritzenthaler’s site not only is a treasure trove of history on the State of Michigan’s resorts, towns, schools, drive-in movies, indoor movie’s but lists and had pictures of every Race Track that is now and ever was in Michigan as well as all of the Drag-Strips that are now and ever were. A link to Gary’s website can be found on our links page.

The MARFC Writer of the Year Award is going to George Pohly, Motor Sports Writer for the Macomb Daily and Oakland Press. Pohly has been writing informative and well researched articles on local racers and racing for a number of years and this year has been providing some very good articles on MARFC Member Terry Bogusz Jr., former MARFC Member Track Mt. Clemens Race Track which has now been closed and demolished for 25 years as well as rising ARCA Star Robb Brent. George’s article on Mt. Clemens was prepared with information club member and leading Michigan racing historian Al Blixt Jr.

The MARFC President’s Award has been decided however at this time, we have not been able to notify the recipient. Once they know of this honor we will release that information.

Don’t forget about the upcoming monthly meeting to be held on October 23rd at the DeCarlo’s Banquet Center. Yes, the same place as the Banquet except we will be upstairs. That is the same night as our annual Cheer raffle drawing. There will be a cash bar available but no food service will be available. The meeting gets the green flag at 7 PM. DeCarlo’s is located at 6015 Ten Mile Rd. (just east of Mound rd.) in Warren, Michigan.
