April Meeting

Our April meeting at Nicky’s Tavern was quite a fun event for those who attended. Our annual elections where held and here are the results of that election. The Executive Board is now as follows: Dave DeHem was voted the new President of MARFC. Bill Barnhart is now Vice-President and Susan Ginter is still Secretary/Treasurer. All the Executive seats were run unopposed so no ballot vote was needed. The entire Board of Directors were re-elected unopposed also. So you’re board members are: Larry Iacoboni, Jeff Moroni, Al Peltier, Cathie Rohloff, Cory Russell, Fran Russo, Laura Tucker, and Bill Walters. We continue to work together to see that our club moves forward in direction to ensure that we grow with the times. Congratulation’s to the new MARFC Board. The new board will take their elective seats on June 1, 2009.

GET WELL SOON!

One of our longtime members Bill Palmer a.k.a “Willie the Clown” for our children’s Christmas parties has been in and out of the hospital for the past month and we would like to send him a very speedy recovery. Bill has served on the board of directors in the past and has not missed a banquet sense becoming a member back in the early 70’s.

Also get well soon to Frances Duff another longtime member who took a bad fall back in late March and has been in serious condition for quite awhile now. Our thoughts and prayers are with both these great members.

DID YOU KNOW TRIVIA QUESTION?

Back around 1969 when the Michigan International Speedway was still young and just getting started. There was a race called the Michigan Automobile Racing Fan Club 100. They even had a trophy girl who presented the winner of the race with a MARFC Trophy. Her name was Karen Hall. Our old friend Vito informed me of this event and we decided to see if anyone could give us the name of the winner of that race. If you know the answer please send it in to me with your name, phone number and address.

All correct answers will be put into a barrel and one person will win their 2010 MARFC membership and a new MARFC hat.

Answer deadline is May 20th.

Send answer to: MARFC TRIVIA QUESTION, E-mail at president@marfc.org. Good Luck to you all!

Congratulations Brad Keselowski!

“Congratulations” to Brad Keselowski for his first of many NASCAR Cup victories! We here at MARFC are very please the Brad has proven himself a new star in the NASCAR world and as the winner of our 2008 MARFC President’s Award back in this past January we are very proud of this Michigan native and look forward to seeing him in victory lane again in the near future.

April 2009 Minutes

From the President

Well the time is here again and the sounds of engines being tuned up and the smell of racing fuel is in the air. I know how hard it is going to be for both race tracks and race fans to be able to support our sport this season as the economy here in Michigan is still very much in the negative stages. I hope that we all can do what we can to insure that auto racing here in our state survives these hard times and bounce back to full grandstands and the pits filled with cars. As in our sport racers, fans and track owners are still all one big family as we tend to stick together to help our sport continue no matter what. So each week that you can attend the races stop the promoters and racers and say thanks for working hard to keep racing alive right here in Michigan. Our friend Vito LoPiccolo contacted me and wanted to tell all who called so sent get well wishes Thank You Very Much. He is doing well but will be side lined for awhile longer yet.

I’d also like to Welcome to the Winston Speedway to our club as a membership track for 2009. Check our events page for our fan club day at Winston this season.

March Meeting

Ron Drager Scott Schultz Ed Inloes Gary Lindahl

Like always a packed house was on hand at the Toledo Speedway Bar & Grille. Many who were there for the Old Timers Reunion during the day stayed around and enjoyed our meeting that followed afterward. First Ron Drager presented two short highlight videos of the 2008 ARCA Re/Max season and then talked about the upcoming 2009 season for ARCA. Then Scott Schultz explained some of the changes that will happen at both Toledo & Flat Rock for 2009. It was time for our next guest speaker “Big Ed” Inloes who talked about the MSTRC bowling fund raiser back in February and how they raised $ 2.526.50 for a pair of racers who need some help with injuries this past season. He also talked about the 2009 seasons at Spartan and Auto City Speedways that he announces at as well as working again with Larry Loynes on their Race Talk radio show on WFNT AM 1470 each week. Then Gary Lindahl talked about the Old Timers Reunion and told a few good racing stories for all to enjoy.

From the President

Only about 6 weeks or so before the 2009 racing season gets underway. I’d like to say welcome back to both the Owosso Speedway and the Dixie Motor Speedway. It will be great to have them back on our fan club day events schedule for 2009. Thanks to all the membership tracks and promoters for working with us on getting our schedule out and finalized so quickly this season. Let’s all hope and pray for a safe and rain free racing season.

February Meeting

Once again Mother Nature tried to stop us from another MARFC event but, we prevailed anyway.  Wish to thank Bob Capps and the staff at Kart 2 Kart for once again having us back at their indoor racing facility. So if you get the chance this season to give them a try it will be well worth the trip. Bob also spoke of both his racing publications that he writes for Vintage Oval Racing and encourages us to check them out. Great to see Larry Henry at the meeting! As many know Larry is the voice at the Michigan International Speedway each season.

Then our next guest’s speakers were Pam & Jeff Parish who are now the owners and promoters of both the Owosso & Dixie Motor Speedways. Pam first spoke of who she and Jeff meet and a few other stories about their relationship and Jeff informed us about how he got stated into racing and how both he and Pam took on a big venue in turning the Whittemore Speedway around and kept it from closing. Now they went to Owosso and made great strides in turning it around and making a great effort to get the racers and fans to return and it seems to have worked and now their biggest challenge is to run two speedways with the new venue of adding the Dixie Motor Speedway to their promotions style. They both are great folks and we encourage all to stop in and check out both these racing facilities in 2009 and beyond.

Last on our list of speakers was Patrick McNamara who gave us a little bit of his racing back ground with driving and owning 4 cylinder racers and involving them into a type of fund raising race theme event at different tracks. Patrick is now into a new venue as owner and publisher of both the MARC TIMES RACING NEWS and THE MICHIGAN RACING SCENE. He has big plans for both papers and they will be published as one with about 40 to 48 full color pages in each weekly paper. We wish him the best in this venture and for more information about a subscription you can contact him at: 734-536-0319 or e-mail him at patrick@michigancircletrack.com. The web site for both papers is: www.michigancircletrack.com
