November Meeting

Kart 2 Kart

What a great night we had with all our special guests. With Joy Fair, Dick Barker and our old friend Jack Goodwin. Many great stories were told and all three took turns answering questions from all the members on hand. Joy and Jack told us of the old days when drivers and teams would run up to seven to eight times a week. Dick informed us of the current cost of racing compared to when Jack & Joy ran many years ago. If you didn’t attend this meeting you missed a very special night these guys could have gone on for hours and hours. Later we had some old video footage of the Mt. Clemens Race Track when it was dirt and during the later years. All three guests did say that the old girl is missed greatly.

October Meeting

Caper’s Restaurant

On October 16, 2004 at Capers Restaurant we had a grand time.

Our first guest speaker was Billy Leslie who’s father is Tracy Leslie talked about how he got started in racing while working with his Uncle Lee down in North Carolina in a legends car and how he worked with his Dad on the ARCA cars while Tracy was driving for Jack Bowsher

at the time. Bill has raced in three different divisions in the past year and a half. Racing the legends car, sportsman car at the Toledo Speedway and the ever-popular enduro’s.  He hopes to be able to race in the ARCA RE/Max series in 2005 with the car that his Dad bought late this year. Tracy was unable to be with us but Bill did an outstanding job even if the boss wasn’t there.

Next we had a few of our members like Bill Stone and myself give a little roast to the host of "Motor City Motorsports" Vito LoPiccolo who was on hand but, as usual Vito took over the mic and told some great stories of his 26 years of being on the air with his show. Great to have Vito around his stories are always funny.

Jeff Metdepenningen was our finial speaker and informed us about how he got started in racing with his Father then all his brothers before him. Jeff has three older brothers there is Robin, Dennis, and Chris who all have raced at one time or another. All of them started at Mt. Clemens Race Track and from there they went all across the country following ARCA with Robin and Dennis and then racing go-karts with brother Chris and also racing Hobby Stocks and Mt. Clemens and the Flat Rock.  Jeff now races a hand full of times each year in the enduro’s across the state and mainly at Flat Rock where his has two victories. He also works on the late model of Arnold Kirsch each week at Flat Rock. Jeff said that racing is a family affair for all the Metdepenningen’s seeing that the third generation is now racing with his son and Dennis’s son.

Greg Studt was scheduled to be with us but was involved in a minor car accident on the way to the meeting but called to say he was Ok and he would try to be with us again soon. Glad Greg is Ok!

October 2004 Minutes

The Michigan Auto Racing Fans Club are saddened by the loss of a good person & track owner Dick Crook from the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. Dick passed away on September 24th after a long battle with brain cancer. Dick & his wife Betty have been great supporters of our club for many years. We wish to send our thoughts and prayers to Betty and the rest of the Crook family and friends at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. "Gods Speed to you Dick"

Another loss for our club was the passing of the mother-in-law of Board member Dave DeHem. Helen Reick was Julie DeHem mother and will greatly be missed by all who knew her. MARFC sends it’s thoughts and prayers to Julie and the DeHem family.

Well October is here and racing has for the most part has come to an end for 2004. Mother Nature has done a fine job of making us miss a lot of races this season and I for one hope that next year she goes on vacation somewhere like South America and let us enjoy our racing in 2005. I had the pleasure of having dinner with our old friend for Florida Jack Goodwin last month and he wishes to say a big Hello to all of our members. A Special "Get Well Soon" to Debbie Majchrzak who is very ill and does a lot for our club.

On September 29, 2004 the final show of "Motor City Motorsports" was broadcast. After 26 years on the air host Vito LoPiccolo formaly retired with a large crowd of listeners and fans at the WLQV radio station. The Meto Detriot area has lost the only true local and national Motorsports radio coverage. We here at MARFC wish Vito and Barbara the best in retirement and health for a long time to come. Thanks Vito!!

Don’t forget 2005 renewal time is coming up soon. There is more information on our upcoming MARFC 39th Annual Awards Banquet just check out the event page.

September 2004 Minutes

September 2004

September already! And with just a few special shows to get in before the weather gets too cold for fans to sit in the stands. Congratulation’s to all the new champions across the state of Michigan we hope to see many of you at our Annual Banquet in January. Speaking about the banquet the date will be January 15, 2005 once again we will be at the Imperial House Banquet Hall located on Groesbeck in Clinton Township, MI.

We need to take a moment and help support and say thanks to the folks who help keep us informed about auto racing not only locally but nationally like the following: National SpeedSport News, Michigan Racing Scene, Mid-American Racing News, Marc Times Racing News and don’t forget the race fans bible the National Speedway Directory. Also the radio shows like: Pit Pass USA on WXYT AM 1270 with Larry Henery and Auto City Race Day on WTRX Flint’s Fox Sports 1330 with Greg Yost and Motor City Motor Sports on WLQV 1500 AM with Vito LoPiccolo.

August Meetings

Kinross Speedway

Weather was outstanding and cars were plentiful in the pit area. The recipient of the MARFC Uniform / Helmet bag went to a driver that has been one of many loyal drivers at the Speedway for years. Despite struggling with a new ride this season, he continues to persevere & compete weekly in the Pure Stock Division driving the # 22 Ray Golladay Sr. Special thanks to Todd & Donna for a grand time and to Gerry Liscumb thanks for all the arrangements. Our members had a fun time. Our VP Larry Iacoboni and wife Suzanne were on hand to welcome members at our fan club table.

Owosso Speedway

Great crowd on hand for the regular show plus autograph night at the speedway. Weather was great and all had a great time. Our MARFC/Uniform Helmet Bag was given to the # 17 street stock driver Nick Burd. Nick is only 17 years old and just graduated from high school and chose to miss his own graduation party to go racing. Congratulations Nick! Very special thanks to Ron Hauser and Dave Bigos for keeping Owosso in our club and to Stacey Hoag for all her help setting up this event. Helpers for the night were Doug Jakeway and Sue Ginter.

Michigan International Speedway

For the sixth time this season Mother Nature put a damper on the days event for all MARFC members who came out to MIS. If you were the ones who arrive very early you got the chance to see some of the practice that was done before the rains came. We’d like to say Thank You to Brett Shelton, Bill Janitz and everyone else at MIS for arranging the event again this year. We look forward to next year’s event at MIS.
